Hi,

I wanted to tell you a couple of stories that have made me feel great this
week.
First, as Karleen mentioned, to have our "Australian of the Year" Dr Fiona
Stanley, who is a paediatrician and researcher in maternal and child health,
and who has stated that she will devote her year to highlighting issues of
child health including asthma, diabetes, infant mental health and obesity.
When I first saw her interviewed last week in her office, the first thing I
noticed was the beautiful charcoal drawing on the wall behind her.
Secondly, in the news yesterday, the mayor of Glen Eira was asked to present
a prize at a Melbourne Race club luncheon over the weekend. His wife was
invited to accompany him. All was well until he was told that that his 12wk
old baby was not welcome, and breastfeeding was not allowed. It has lifted
my spirits enormously to see this lovely family on TV saying this like "a 12
week old baby needs to be with her mother" And the mayor saying "She's
breastfed - of course she has to be fed every hour or two." The Victorian
Attorney General is quoted in my local paper as saying "The Melbourne racing
club needs to understand that we have laws in this state that make it quite
clear that you cannot discriminate against a person on the basis of
breastfeeding" The equal opportunities commissioner said on a radio
interview she would be contacting the racing club regarding the illegality
of their rules. Our own ABA Lactation Resource centre manager was
interviewed. Public opinion on the talk backs was overwhelmingly positive.
The Racing club says it's not planning to change it's rules :(
But some days it does seem all worth while, after all

Love,
Barb IBLC/ABA counsellor
