I think a question that leads to interesting and helpful discussion is
one like: "How have your breastfeeding goals changed from when you were
pregnant or first nursing?" or "What have you learned since your baby
arrived that surprised you or changed your view of mothering?"
Moms in the group you describe have likely already become comfortable
with ideas like attachment parenting, taking baby into bed with them,
not being tied to schedules, etc. These ideas and practices may well be
very different that their views and goals before baby came. This will
help them see that their views on toddler nursing are also likely "in
flux" and liable to change over time.
I wouldn't be comfortable asking moms in their introductions to declare
what they think is an appropriate weaning age especially in
introductions early in the group's development. It might tend to divide
the group into "soon" and "later" camps. They come to help themselves
define what is an appropriate age rather than to ask them to declare a
stand at the start. Perhaps it might be more appropriate to ask
something like "What have you heard about toddler nursing?" or "What
have you heard about when babies should wean or be weaned?"
As for the subjects to cover, "dealing with the attitudes of others"
would certainly be helpful. Perhaps instead of "tricks to avoid nursing
in public" it might be more open and not presuming a particular view to
put it like "when the toddler wants to nurse in public or in the
presence of non-supportive people". This will allow for a more free
discussion of whether one might be open about meeting the childs needs
whereever and whenever they occur, whether it is appropriate to
encourage the child to wait, whether one would have "code words" for
nursing, etc.
