I enjoyed the previous LN thread on this subject. In the 10 years in private practice, I sometimes ran across a
family who took the approach that was previous noted: "If formula is bad, then I'll use goat's milk" or "organic
soy milk" or some of the other concoctions that were described on LN in detail. I think the downside of focusing
on the risks of formula as opposed to the risks of "not breastfeeding" is that in an effort to avoid that "risky"
formula, some families may choose a human milk alternative that is even more risky.

By emphasizing clearly that it's the "not breastfeeding" that's risky, we hopefully decrease that possibility.

Valerie, I am curious to know the breastfeeding setting in which you work. Do you work directly with mothers and
babies? I find that my optimism grows with successful resolution of breastfeeding issues. Do you have the chance
to be a part of those kinds of experiences?

In any case, here's hoping that you can find some reason for optimism in some area of your life during this
holiday season. Life is a very mixed bag. And while I agree that it is vital to be aware of the areas needing
improvement in our very imperfect world and work to make them better, let's hope we can all find room in our
hearts for gratitude for life's many gifts.

All my best to you and yours,
