There is a section in the book Breastfeeding - a guide for the medical profession that addresses this. That is a good book for a doctor to be referred to.
The point is that the baby is born growth restricted and needs the calories of a baby at his gestation (not the lesser calories
of a baby his weight). Some of these babies do not suck well, and do not transfer milk well. Sometimes baby will need more calories than mom can provide at first.
This does not necessarily preclude direct bf.
What you might want to do is first clarify what the dr wants to do, and then you can make suggestions that are more bf-friendly, e.g. test wts,
your thorough evaluation of mom's supply and baby's ability to transfer, use of a lactation aid at breast, dropper feeding extra expressed milk, etc.
