The reason for putting opiates in the spinal is that you can use lower doeses
thn that needed for pain control if it is given IV (it works directly on the
pain fibers. The advantage of duramotph is that it lasts for 24 hours so the
epidural catheter can be removed and pain control lasts for 24 hours. Reports
from mothers in one o fthe hospitals here that use it do not complain of
speeiness or breastfeeding difficulty (anecdotal respose). If you didn't use
any opiates after c/s section what meds did you use (if any). I find that
havind a mopther who is not in pain post c/s usually helpful for
breastfeeding successs even if she sleeps a little more (yes I've had two
sections - one with an epidural patient contrlled anesthesia pump (not
duramorph - It was wonderful and one with a spinal and morphine IV (it stunck
but baby breastfed fine.
