Dear Robert and Lactnetters:

Good point about informing parents of collecting lot numbers and
expiration dates on their ABM. Unfortunately, that data is not always
to be trusted!

Currently, in Lexington, KY, there is a Federal Suit being brought
against a wholesaler for falsely relabeing ABM. Apparently, the
wholesaler, through a nationwide network, would buy mass quantities of
ABM from warehouses, etc., at reduced rates, ship them to a central
processing location, and relabel the containers. This meant that the
lot numbers, expiration dates, and other information were often changed
to make the product sellable. The retailers purchasing from this
wholesaler were often small mom-and-pop stores serving inner-city or
low-income areas of our city (and such products were often purchased
with taxpayer dollars through the WIC program).

Good thing you can trust human milk!
