Well!  I think I've heard everything now!  Had a new African lady as a
client this afternoon, baby still not latching at 12 days of age. Her
husband described how the baby "struggles and struggles" to breastfeed, and
he believed that his wife's flat nipples were the cause of the problem.  The
staff at the hospital where baby was delivered obviously thought so too.
They suggested that mom place CLOTHES PEGS on the areola just behind the
nipples to draw them out!! Mom actually tried this for a while, but
confessed she could not keep it up, it was just too painful.  Can you
BELIEVE this?????

It turns out that nipples are flat-ish, but graspable.  The actual problem,
as far as I can see, is baby's retracted tongue.  Suggested less drastic
measures to help with this, and EBM to feed in the meantime, obviously much
to mom's relief!
