Sarah,
More than 10 years ago, I participated (as did many very well known
lactation advocates in the health care field) in a project funded and developed by
WellStart. A team of RN/LC, MD (mostly Family Practice as I recall) RD and a
few other disciplines spent time in San Diego working on this type of
project.(It was a privilege to meet and brainstorm with Gary Freed MD, Anthony Repucci
MD, Sally Page-Goertz MSN, IBCLC, Liz Feldman MD and many others.)

There is a manual available from WellStart with objectives, exercises, case
studies and excellent patient information based on this work. Informally and
formally, I've worked a bit with the training of residents and student
nurses. (Dr. Jen Tieman and I worked together when she was a resident and her
community project was on the promotion of breastfeeding in a low income and
minority population - we started a breastfeeding support group and trained peer
counselors to "work" in the community). I used to present to the Family
Practice, Pediatric and OB residents weekly and monthly. They would do rounds with
me and consult on interesting cases. (Another aside: the photo of a young
doctor holding a newborn on the LLL Medical Associate Brochure is one of our
residents.) It was a wonderful model, not as structured as it could have been,
but we were SO busy. Please check the Wellstart website for some very good
materials to help in your quest. You don't have to reinvent the wheel! And I'd be
glad to help you out with some of the information we came up with if you
email me privately. There are many people on Lactnet who have experience in this
area as well. I'm sure you'll get LOTS of good ideas.
Best wishes on your career.
