I work at an outpatient breastfeeding center and we also use Medications and Mother's Milk book. We can't necessarily say a medication is "safe" and that they can go ahead and take it. We give them the information from the book and let them make their own decision about it. When I worked in the hospital setting we had some conflicts with doctors telling mothers they could not breastfeed on certain medications that were not contraindicated. They were actually scaring patients into not breastfeeding and getting mad at the LCs who were giving the patients research and copies of information from the book. It is our responsibility as medical professionals to give parents informed consent. We are not doing anything wrong or unethical by providing the information and allowing parents to decide on their own.
