Hi, all. Righard & Alade (Lancet 336:1105, 1990) reported that
when pethidine (demerol) was given 45 min - 2 hr before delivery,
5 out of 11 babies sucked correctly. When it was given 2 - 13 hr
before delivery, only 3 out of 29 sucked correctly. This seems
to be the same direction as Ione reported for Stadol. The PRD
says that demerol, Stadol and Nubain are all potential neonatal
respiratory depressants. Hope there's room on Ione's soapbox for
me! I'd also love to see women really and truly fully informed
about pain meds in labor. Even better, have them offered the
possibility of trained doula for labor as "pain
reducers".....Sigh. Judy Knopf in Beer Sheva, Israel
