We use a combination of pyrimethamine and dapsone as malarial prophylaxis -
baby will get some but not enough for a therapeutic dose.  The
paediatricians don't usually recommend that the baby receives prophylaxis
until the age of 6 months.
Because of resistance, chloroquine is usually reserved for treating malaria,
but fortunately I haven't had a client fall prey to this yet.  However, when
we lived in Malawi I did have a friend who was hospitalized with cerebral
malaria while nursing hr small baby. Her husband described how he held the
baby next to her for breastfeeding while she was comatose. She recovered and
baby kept on breastfeeding - no idea of the meds.

Dr Tom, seeing that your wonderful book is now being exported all over the
world, perhaps a future edition could include some of meds used in the
tropics? Eg quinine, chloroquine, pyrimethamine, dapsone, praziquantel, etc
...????
