Kathy D. mentioned that she knows of one study that discusses the potential
consequences of missing the window of opportunity for starting solids. I'm
currently reading a 1998 textbook on pediatric dysphagia. Written by a
speech & language pathologist, the introductory paragraph on "Normal
Development of Feeding Skills" cites one 1964 (yes, 1964) study at length
saying that there appears to be a "critical and/or sensitive" period for
introducing chewable textures to children, and if solids are not introduced
during this time, an important developmental milestone may be missed. She
continues that this can lead to rejection of solids later, and says that
children who are developing normally should be able to chew foods at about
six months.

This ties into the discussion of a week or so ago about attending the Wolf &
Glass workshop of anatomy and physiology of suck. There's a lot of differing
opinions out there among the allied health care professionals, and I think,
we as lactation consultants, need to be aware of how others are thinking.

It disturbs me that this text presented one study as the basis for 'rules'
on introducing solids. It wouldn't hurt them to know our concerns as well,
and attending these kinds of conferences is one way to do that.
