Just a quick word of Code compliance issues. NABA as you know is working with Evenflo to help them become Code compliant. In order to do this, they had to remove all pictures and text relating to bottles and artificial nipples from their website. I have consulted with ICDC, Baby Milk Action, INFACT Canada, and UNICEF regarding what had to be done to assure Code compliance by this company. One of these actions was the removal of all bottles and nipples from the website. The internet had not been invented in 1981 when the Code was created, so we have had to depend on precedent for answering some of these questions. The Code is quite silent on bottles and nipples so the IBFAN organizations have had to determine that bottles and nipples on a website constitutes marketing to mothers. Marketing is the plan for getting a consumer to buy a product. Selling involves the exchange of money for good or services. This is a difference which the Code recognizes in that it is not a violation to sell bottles and nipples in a store. The packaging must also not glorify bottles, nipples, or bottle-feeding. The website in question markets bottles and nipples directly to consumers which is a Code violation. We have to hold all companies to this, not just some.
