Hi-I'm Dani Hudspeth, RN IBCLC at NICU, Baylor Med. Center, Dallas, TX. I'm a new LACTNET subscriber and I really appreciate receiving new information on this program.
In response to Patricia Drazin's suggestion for cabbage leaves and sage tea, I wanted to share that a patient of mine was a brittle diabetic and had PIH - both sometimes seem to inhibit milk production. In her case, something had the opposite effect. She was producing 268 OUNCES per day - that's over 6 litres!! Lynn Emslie (our #1 lactation cons.) and I had her using cabbage round the clock for about 4-5 days in order to slow her down to 48 ounces per day. I suggested to this patient that she should have her pituitary checked with her physician - she never did. She had to nurse with a nipple shield because she was so engorged even after pumping that there was no way for the baby to latch on. She eventually ended up pumping and giving EBM. She did this for about 4 or 5 months and got tired of all the pumping. She used cabbage to completely dry up. I did not know about the sage tea at that time. This patient's mother said that she had had the same problem when she had babies.
