Dear Friends:
Thank you Kathleen for sharing a very interesting perspective and your
own experience.
When I had my first baby in bed with me, a hospital nurse came in and
told me not to do that and that I could smother my baby. I ignored her; not from
a position of knowledge, but from resistance and defensiveness. I saw my
chart later, and the nurse had documented that she had found me in bed with my
baby and "warned against" the practice.
I reacted in a similar way to what Kathleen described. The nurse was
doing the best that she could, with a strong belief in the rightness of what she
was saying. In her mind, she was helping me. I resisted her help.
I don't know what I would have said or done if that nurse's counseling
skills had been better....
Today, I talk to parents about safe co-sleeping, using the AAP
suggestions. I attempt to present my point of view in the most gentle way; my intention
is to open the range of choices for parents. Yet it will be up to the parents
to be open to my point of view or to resist it.....
What a complex subject this is!
    warmly,
