After all the possible discomforts and complications of pregnancy and
delivery, there has to be some payback to mothers to consider doing this
again to keep the human species going. Yes, the smiles and baby sounds
are a payback, but I believe both the smell of our baby and overpowering
feeling of all is right with the world during breastfeeding works like
an opiate on the brain.

My mother-in-law lived in South America with my father-in-law. It was
said in the family that he took her away to save all our marriages. I
know that I couldn’t get along with her. We had absolutely nothing in
common and she had to one-up me in everything due to her own
insecurities. She could make me livid. When my second daughter (who
looked like me) was 6 months old, my mother-in-law arrived back in the
US at our house for a corrective surgery and 3 month recuperation. Even
though she could press my buttons and obviously didn’t like baby #2,
within a few minutes of breastfeeding my daughter the anger toward my
mother-in-law was gone. Nothing else could ever do that.
