I have a couple of LLLL friends here who have thumb suckers.  they
carried their babies in slings and  nursed them as much as is humanly
possible, incl trying to get them to not suck their thumbs by nursing
the babies as much as babies would allow.  however, baby still had
their own ideas on this and would come off the breast specifically to
thumb suck.

I think it's a power struggle one woudln't want to enter willingly.
