I have a clients with an unusual situation. Here's the facts:
Breastfed baby boy at 6 months contacted blastocystis (sp) disease and was treated for parasite.
By 8.5 months of age baby had lost 2 lbs and developed eczema on face, buttocks, elbows. Baby was hospitalized with dehydration and general poor health. It was determined via scratch tests that baby was allergic to eggs and dairy. He was put on neocate and since he wouldn't take a bottle he was put on tube feeding. He's since regained his lost weight but they wont take out the tube until he's eating by mouth. He refuses all solids and mom has pumped for 6 weeks hoping to nurse him again. The mp's advise against bf as "allergens" would be present in her milk. Mom said she would go off eggs and dairy but they said "no go". "Neocate is so gentle and pure, why risk it?" Mom is sure that since her baby did quite well on her milk for 6 months, why wouldn't he be alright now?
I told the mom that the decision is always her's to make but I thought I'd try and see if anyone else has been in this situation. Thanks for your collective wisdom.
