Ann: We have a wonderful oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the area who uses
a cold laser technique that he developed. He does an eval in the office and, if
indicated, the procedure also. He has the parents bring the baby in in a car
seat, sets the seat with the baby in it on his exam table, wheels his machine
over and does the procedure right there in the office. He does not usually use
anesthesia (says there is no pain involved - parents say the baby does not
appear in discomfort), and there is no bleeding because the laser cauterizes as
it cuts. He cuts just until he feels the tongue release, then stops. He says
this is a good way to get to those posterior tongue ties.
Most tonsillectomies are now performed using laser - much less bloody and an
easier recovery than the old-fashioned way. I used to hate to scrub on a T&A
when I worked in the OR.
He has spoken several times at our local lactation meetings. We have all
encouraged him to write up his procedure and hopefully one day he will.
