Hi Pam,

I'm going to make several assumptions...that the baby is no longer
positive for Salmonella and that they weren't using any antibiotics to
treat that infection. If that's the case, then I'd proceed as we would
for any child with a cow's milk protein allergy and ask mom to try an
elimination diet first.

Rectal prolapse can happen with acute diarrhea, but usually in older
kids. It happens in children with CF as well. It would be an unusual
cause of bleeding in a newborn.

Maybe we just have an "educational opportunity" for helping the provider
understand that an infant with a cow's milk allergy doesn't need a
specialized formula and can continue to nurse.

Any idea where the salmonella came from?
