Hi All,

I have a Mom with a 2 week old baby. Mom has very painful cracked and
bleeding nipples. This is her second child, no problems nursing the first
for 10 months. When I saw her a few days ago baby positioned well with good
suck, but Mom very apprehensive about the initial latch due to pain. She
has a mastitis in one breast and endometriosis and is on antibiotics. I
noticed no sign of yeast. She has been using Kenacomb ointment on her
nipples. At my visit with her we decided it would be best to pump the worse
side and only feed on the better side until some healing took place. When I
called her today she said she is feeding on both sides now, however some
pain is still there and she is taking Tylenol before each feeding. She
feels the cracks are getting worse and the ointment is not working. Would
lethacin help? Could it be yeast even though I saw no spots? Isn't
Kenacomb for yeast? This Mom is getting discouraged and doesn't want to
have to take Tylenol indefinitely. Also, baby eats infrequently 4X per day.
Her doctor told her not to wake the baby up for feeds, that 4X per day is
enough. Mom does seem to have lots of milk. Because I am just a lay person
I didn't want to go against her doctors advice, however I tried to encourage
her to feed more often to build her milk supply in the one side. Is 4x per
day enough for a newborn? My own nursed 12 or more times a day when they
were that age. Thank you for your help in advance.
