Sharon, what a wonderful description of sore nipples in the early days. I
totally agree with your assessments and that too much intervention can do
more harm than good.
Pain in general is so different from one person to the next. If there is any
work done to help explain the pain in the early days, I would love to see it.
I can say from personal experience (20-23 years ago) that I never felt any
nipple pain and I am sure I did not have a perfect latch. Then on the other
extreme was a woman who had sensitive nipples most of her life and could not
stand the pain of the baby's mouth, a pump or hand expressing of her breast,
so weaned in the first week.
