I am pleased about starting a discussion about the hazards of powdered formula, and the role of an IBCLC in teaching mothers correct use of the same. I got soundly slapped recently for sharing my concerns about this while editing a postpartum discharge book for our patients. I had some information to back up my contribution to the discussion but it was pooh poohed by several others on the committee with comments like "oh that's just your opinion" and since I "can't back it up with a statement verbatim with the caution (not to use with infants less than ....months old)" it is not being addressed. I find that NO one teaches our patients about how to mix, use or feed formula to anyone. Our babies are overfed, incorrectly fed, and fed what ever mom can get her hands on from WIC. I don't want to get started on my opinion of formula feeding teaching at our facility, or the amount of supplementation that mothers do because they want to "do both".

There was a very good article in Pediatrics recently about infant formula use addressing powdered formula but too late for me....I guess the WHO information and recall from the manufacturer isn't enough?
