In the anthropological research literature about frequency of breastfeeding,
there are cultures in the world where children continue to nurse several
times an hour around the clock (for a few minutes each time, if that) until
they are 3-4 years of age.

If a mother wants a child to continue to nurse til the minimum of one year
recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, or the minimum of two
years recommended by the World Health Organization, she probably needs her
6-12 month old to be nursing at least 6 times/24 hour. I'm just making that
up as a ballpark figure. I think if a 6-12 month old is only nursing once
or twice a day, they probably aren't going to make it to two years. If the
mother is concerned that the baby is nursing too often, there really can't
be a "too often" -- babies if allowed may nurse as often as 4 X 24 (96)
times a day.
