Hi everyone,

I received a question from a hospital-based IBCLC colleague. They have a
mother who a hepatitis C infection with high viral load. She started to
breeastfeed her newborn, since according to all evidence-based guidelines,
breastfeeding with HCV is safe. However, she now has cracked and bleeding
nipples. HCV is transmitted through blood-blood contact. They fear to let
the baby breastfeed.

I have told my colleague that, unless infant has mouth or gut wounds, it
should be safe... but I´d still love to read your input. I understand that
she (and the mother) are scared.

Thanks in advance :)
