Dear Dr. Leeper,

I have used Shatavari for over a year until my baby turned 1. Here in India or more in Mumbai, this is available over the counter and does not require a doctors' presciption and is routinely used by many mothers, although I do not believe this should be the case and need to be weighed carefully for undesirable effect such as oversupply.

Galactogogue

Extract of shatavari has been shown to increase both the weight of mammary lobulo-aveolar tissue and the milk yield. This effect was attributed to the action of released corticosteroids or an increase in prolactin.Shatavari has been found to stimulate milk production in buffaloes. The galactogenic effect has been confirmed by a clinical trial. Subject: Shatavari

We are trying to find information on using Shatavari to increase milk
production---it is mentioned in "Making More Milk", and Diana West told me
it is useful.  I am looking for any information on its safety and
effectiveness. Anyone out there using it?  My biggest concern is that other
MDs in the community are going to flip if we start to recommend it.
