<< I've always told moms that you might go off and forget the pump, but you
never forget your hands! :-) >>

Yes, hand expression is an important skill, and maybe most important for the
same employed moms who think of the pump as the first parenting task they
need to nail down. My personal anecdote: The very first day I left my
oldest child for more than an hour was for a big sales meeting. I was sure I
could never bring my big blue Lactina out in public (boy did that opinion
change and soon!) so I removed the pump parts themselves to use as a hand
pump in the ladies room. But when I got there, gigantic and leaking, I
found that in addition to the piston from the electric pump you needed to add
that spring that was somewhere in a plastic bag under my bed. So yes, the
best laid plans gang aft agley -- best to know how to use your own hands.
(Plus you don't get a back ache or nasty stares carrying your hands to the
sales meeting...)

When that same baby later became a big sister, she would watch me run through
the diaper bag check list before leaving the house and end with, "Ima, have
you remembered to pack your breasts?"
