<There is quite an old study (1984) which I haven't read but seen
referenced which says a short bedside teaching intervention in
hospital improves bf incidence at one month (Jonson CA, Garza C,
Nichols B, J Nutr Educ 1984; 16:19-22).>

"The 2001 study that Magda highlighted indicated that bedside teaching
about bf tended to *reduce* maintenance and satisfaction....

But as Magda said, if teaching...actually reduces the liklihood of bf
success.....what do we do about it?????"

I speculate that the difference in the outcomes in these two studies has
very much to do with what is taught. In the 1984 study "a short bedside
teaching intervention" is used with success. I think the key word is SHORT.
I teach "survival skills" in the hospital. That includes only what the mom
needs to know to get BF off to a good start: positioning and latch
techniques, frequency and pattern of BF, day/night confusion, signs of
adequate intake/output, and the Breastfeeding Helpline number to call with
questions. I give handouts with a paragraph on each of these topics.

I think we overload and overwhelm new moms when we attempt to give too much
information at a time when they are not able to handle it. They are often
still patients themselves, not ready to take-in, much less take-charge, of
info. Tell them just what they need to know to have some confidence at
discharge, then follow-up by phone, and give them a number to call when they
want/need more information.
