<< Subject: Oatmeal and Licorice????

 Hi Ladies!
I have not checked the archives, so if this has been discussed before, please
forgive me. I received a phone call from a mother of twins today. Hospital
helper (nurse/educator) has suggested that the mother eat oatmeal or black
licorice to increase her supply. Can anyone provide some information on
oatmeal or black licorice increasing milk supply?

I have never heard of licorice used for this purpose...but I can tell you
that it is a very common practice among Dominican and some Puerto Rican women
to drink a beverage called "Jugo de avena" (literally oatmeal juice) to
increase milk supply. Its basically a beverage they make with pulverized
oatmeal, evaporated milk and sometimes vanilla extract. I am often asked by
my Dominican clients if they should drink this. I always answer with
reminding them of regular management techniques, and discussing normal
feeding patterns, but I add that drinking this beverage probably wont' hurt
and who knows maybe it will help. Its common for the woman's mother to make
this beverage for her during pregnancy and the postpartum period..its
considered very nourishing.
