Thank you to all who responded to my question.  I have read some of the research which backs up the current recommendations for supplementing the breastfed infant with Vitamin D, but why on day 1-3?  Does the research indicate there is harm or lack of benefit in waiting until gut maturation/cellular closure? Many patients in my neck of the woods have not chosen a pediatrician until the day of discharge.  Waiting until at least the first doctor visit with discussion about the new recommendation/education of parents prior to giving the supplement would be best imo.
