Dear hospital LC's,
How many of you find that infant's never take as much with a
supplementation system at the breast, regardles of te size of the lumen,as
they would with a bottle? And this is knowing what the baby took from the
breast by doing ac/pc weights. I find it frustrating to be told that a baby
needs to take x cc's or bottle supplementation will be needed. This is
especially true for NICU babies who need to demonstrate a certain intake
prior to discharge. Not only do mothers want to bottle feed so that they
can take their babies home sooner and the insurance company doens't care
how te baby gets the calories as long as they are discharged ASAP. I have
used the larger lumen tubing, tried both tubes at the breast but there is
still only so much a baby will take at the breast. As soon as the bottle is
put in the baby's mouth, they take so much more.
Finally, if a baby doesn't take enough at the breast, does anyone
compensate by fortifying the breastmilk to make the breastmilk more calorie
dense? I look forward to your responses.
Christine
