Dear Lactnet readers
I received a call from a breastfeeding mother this evening worried =
that her milk wasnt good enough for her baby
Her baby is now 9 wks old - was sleeping from10pm at night until =
around 6 in the morning. the last 2 nights he has woken for feeding =
around 3-30am Did go back to sleep, but through the days is feeding =
every 1-11/2 hrs and hasnt slept well through the day (15mins) and =
45mins)=20
If a baby sleeps long hours at night as this one has, it is normal for
that baby to feed often during the day.
Mothers breast are fuller in the morning than in the evening.
This is normal...especially with a baby who does not feed often at
night.
Mum gave the baby 100 mls formula feed yesterday and he still wasnt =
satisfied.
He has lots of wet and dirty nappies.
Does this sound like growth spurt feeding?
This sounds like normal feeding, if the baby is gaining weight well. It
sounds to me like a mother who does not understand normal breastfeeding
patterns.
The idea of growth spurt feeding at the second month is a bit more
undestood these days. The baby's needs are, between the 1-6 month,
approx 19-30 oz / day. Babies of this age often breastfeed often,
especially if they sleep so much at night. I would recommend that this
woman read Pitman and Newman's book, Dr. Jack Newman's Ultimate
Breastfeeding Book of Answers, available anywhere, and on amazon used,
and also that they take a look at Cindy's pages at
www.breastfeedingonline.com, at the section by Jack Newman MD, on how to
get off to a good stasrt, how to know your baby is getting enough milk,
etc.
Some good education, along with a LLL group perhaps, will help this
mother immeasureably. Kathleen

I have suggested to Mum that she makes herself (Tigers Milk) =
milkshakes to increase her calorie count.
