The DARLING (Davis Area Research in Lactation, Infant Nutrition, and
Growth) studies found that deceleration of growth velocity in the second
half of the first year was the rule for their study group of healthy,
breastfed children. This series of studies were published in
Pediatrics, and are available on medline.
This said, I have noticed that children this age will increase their
weight gain if offered the breast more frequently throughout the day.
Developmental changes at this age make the baby more distractible and
more active, both of which can inadvertently reduce feeding frequency
and duration. The easiest intervention is just to make mothers aware of
these factors and their potential impact on total feeding time, and
advise them to offer feedings rather than waiting for their busy
pre-toddlers to ask for them.
