Dear Friends:
I saw yet another case today of a dyad having problems because the
mother was trying to manipulate her breast and baby to fit the fancy nursing
pillow. Those pillows should come with a warning, "Please place pillow AFTER baby
is comfortably latched on".
***
Nursing pillows often do more harm than good. Not only latch problems, because the pillow raises baby way too high to be within reach of the breas (especially with the table-like pretty hard preformed ones)t, or because baby snuggles into the corner between pillow and mom's belly (especially with the big, fluffy ones), it often leads to disconnection between mom and baby. I way too often see moms place baby on top of the pillow, help a little with latching on and then leave baby on it's own and both of their hands elsewere.
Special nursing pillows are one more thing to make breastfeeding difficult. Ofcourse they can be a tool for mom-babypairs with an extra challenge if used well and with caution.

Warmly,
