Marsha,
I too am an SF fan. My favorite birth/breastfeeding passage is in
Jack the Bodiless by Julian May. Teresa Kendall is pregnant with an "illegal"
baby - he is genetically imperfect but has a powerful precocious, intelligent
mind, and he's "metapsychic". The breastfeeding management is superb - Teresa
tells her uncle/middwife that she will spend the next 7 days resting and
nursing baby Jack, and when the baby needs to feed at night "She pulls him
into bed with her and nurses him without really ever waking up". Gotta love
it.
