The Breastfeeding Atlas by Kay Hoover and Barbara Wilson-Clay has a
fabulous picture Fig. 135 showing a sort of strand in the milk of a
mother with mastitis.

The ensuing discussion on page 38 discusses "clumps in milk" suggesting

"That visible changes in the milk often signal the onset of mastitis.
Mentions reports from some women tha milk pumped during bouts of
mastitis contain what appears to be congealed globules of material. The
clumps will go away and there is no research to suggest tha mothers
should withhold thier milk from infants during mastitis." (Many
references are listed.)

Finally, "one mother discovered that the clumps dissipated when she left
the milk standing for a short time."

This awesome book has fabulous color pictures and great text with the
most current references available.
