Let me just clarify. Most of the nurses I work with are not supplementing b/c baby hasn't eaten for 20 minutes. I just have a few hold outs who put the idea that the baby isn't really eating if not fed for a certain length of time.

I see it as the pendulum has swung too far the other way. I remember in 1992 when I gave birth to my first son, being told not to breastfeed for more than 2 min the first day or I would get sore. So I see lots out there telling staff not to limit feedings but some older nurses have gone further by saying baby should feed for a certain length of time.

I have kept the "wolves at bay" and baby's not supplemented when fed for short periods by pointing out that if baby is stooling, then baby is feeding. This is what I was taught. Now I worry that I'm wrong and I have nothing to keep nurses from supplementing for not long enough feedings.

As far as NPO babies, am I wrong in that they are "fed" through IV thus they are being fed and will stool for that alone?

Jeni- feeling a lack of confidence and in need of education.
