aloha netters.
We had an interesting case this week show up, MSUD, very rare metabolic
disorder (so I now understand). Mom was breastfeeding in the hospital,
delivered by repeat C/S., baby presented as somewhat placid at first,
started to pick up and nurse better, day 4 healthy mom and baby went home to
neighbouring island, baby started to get very sick day 5or6, refused
feedings and got dehydrated, so the one pedi that was available (I'm told
he is there once a month) just happen to see the babe and sent them back to
our tertiary care facility on Oahu, where they are treating this ill child
of only 6 days old. Concurrently the original pedi recieved a call from
the national lab that runs the PKU screening, stating that this baby had
Maple sugar urine disease! So he was calling all over trying to find this
family not knowing they had already been readmitted.
To make a long story short, this unfortunate baby was also very
lucky thanks to the screening that is done on these rare metabolic
diseases, as well as timing.
I had the opportunity to discuss breastfeeding and PKU as he was adament
about not breastfeeding a PKU child, as he would not allow a MSUD child to
breastfeed either. I couln disagree the latter however...
My question now, is breastfeeding compatible with maple sugar urine
disease? I was unable to find anything in my references. It baffles me
that breastfeeding would be contraindicated with any disorder, and that
artificial anything would be better. Any info appreciated.

Thanks in advance from tina,
the weather is sunny and warm, I am longing to see the beautiful colors of
fall and feel the crisp air, but I'll enjoy my walk on the beach anyway!
