My husband retired after 21 years on active duty with the Navy and I must concur. We had excellent care while on active duty and it continues as retirees. My older two (now 19 and 17) were born in Army and Navy hospitals, and while the postpartum care in the Army hospital was barbaric, the pediatric care was fine. My son had many medical problems, and like Margo, we would be in the poor house as well if not for the medical/psychiatric care he received, and still receives, as a dependent.

And, FWIW, while the Army facility (now closed) was far from baby friendly, when my son was a couple of months old and hadn't pooped in 10 days and I didn't know any better and was worried, the pediatrician at the base clinic took one look at me and said "You don't need me. My wife is the lactation consultant and her office is next door. Go right over."
