I was diagnosed with PSVT with my first pregnacy, and then the diagnosis was
changed a couple of times before we finally arrived at the diagnosis of
Wolf-Parkinson-White Syndrome with my third pregnancy. The episodes were
worse with pregnancy--i was seen
at the ER 19 times during my second pregnancy. With my third pregnancy I had
one episode with a heart rate of over 300 ( the monitor kept converting back
to zero) for over 2 hours. I have been on dig, and it was upped to almost a
lethal dose at one point ( had to do 24 hr urine catches every other day for
30 days--what fun!). We later found that mine was on the back side of my
heart and dig doesn't work on that type.( If I remember correctly the
explaination). I had an episode once that continued for over 3 days ( had
to be admitted to
the CCU for that one). this continued through three pregnancies, and three
bfing children. I finally had an ablation in 1992 and am now cured.
throughout it all, I insisted on being treated normally (as normal as I could
be ). I refused to be transferred to high risk pregnancy clinic ( I told
them if they classified me as high risk I would not come in for appointments
until I went into labor and then would deliver in the back of the van in the
parking lot with the TV news anchor filming it!) I had this feeling that the
baby was fine during the whole time( they were) and the only concession I
allowed was for a crash cart in the room and a electro-cardio-physiologist on
call. Everything went well.
I was bounced around with several different meds that did not work for
severalyears but adnvances have been made in this field in the past 20 yrs..
I used the meds episodically while bfing. I did wean the last child (he was
over 3 yrs old) when I had the bad episode that landed me in CCU-it ended up
being for 13 days. Weaning was my choice at that point and he did fine. If
you want more info feel free to email me.

(PS--While I was in CCU for the 13 days I was studying for my IBCLC exam. No
phones, no interruptions, no responsibilities. It was the perfect place to
study except whenever I would get into the Ruth Lawrence book, the monitors
would go off. It was due to the stress of trying to understand it-my heart
would go crazy! The nurses threatened to ban Lawrence from the unit!. I sat
for the exam 3 weeks after the hospitalization. AND passed! Now to re sit
next year!)
