Dear Lactnetters,
I am interested to know how you all deal with the following. As a private
rental station/bf counselor I often rent pumps to NICU Moms and lately I
rented to 2 Moms with gravely ill babies. I want to support these Moms on a
regular basis but I find it hard to work out a strategy for calls. I find
it v. difficult calling the Mom to see how things are going when I am aware
the infant may have died. (One Mom has twins around 1.5 lb ea., the other
has a baby with a diaphragmatic hernia. To make it even harder, neither has
English as a 1st language). Last time I called the NICUs to check on the
babies' conditions before I called the Moms. I guess this is the obvious
thing to do but I wonder if it is bothering NICU staff to do this
regularly. Do any of you have time-tested strategies on this?
