I've been asked about IBCLCs who are not RNs and how they can touch patients
in the hospital - some believe that only licensed professionals have the
right to touch patients (RN, MD, etc.)according to the laws in my state
(California).

My question was, then, how come Occupational Therapists, Physical
Therapists, etc. hired by the hospitals CAN touch patients.

The answer seems to be "Credentialing" and having written permission to
practice within a defined scope of practice by the hospital's own policies
and protocols.  

I know Marsh Walker (thank you, Marsha!) is working hard to get IBCLCs
licensed - we ALL need to work on that, one state at a time...but while we
get there....
