I applaud hospitals who support mothers' and babies' health rather
than distributing free marketing packages from infant formula
companies. I am a mother, and like 70% of other US mothers, I chose
to breastfeed my baby. I appreciated that my hospital facilitated me
keeping my baby close by my side and breastfeeding her on cue. When
I was unsure of whether I was breastfeeding "correctly," the hospital
sent a board-certified lactation consultant for education and
reassurance. The nursing staff also seemed supportive and educated
about breastfeeding.

I would have been appalled to be handed a "free" sample of a food
that is known to be inferior to my milk after I had clearly stated
that I intended to breastfeed. I have no problem with a mother
getting a free sample if she requests one; but I hope she will be
informed by the "donor" that generic infant formula is nutritionally
equivalent to the sample brand, only less expensive.

Hospitals who choose to market health and nothing else are the real
supporters of mothers and babies.

Sincerely,
Lynnette Hafken
