Hi, All: I find this subject fascinating as well as puzzling. Why would a mother
choose to never put her baby to her breast, choosing a machine that makes
an obnoxious noise with plastic on her breasts over the sweet comforting
warmth and smell of her own baby? I'm wondering if control issues do not play
a large part in this decision. Last week, a mom who I had worked with 2 years
ago, had her 2nd baby with us. She was quite adament with the staff that
she would not put the baby to her breast ("it feels disgusting, a baby sucking
on my breast"). She wanted to feed EBM and asked to be set up with a
pump. She told me she would be primarily feeding EBM and "sometimes"
nursing the baby. She said she did this with her 1st baby. The funny thing is,
evertime I came in to see her on rounds, she had her baby to the breast and
baby was nursing well and they both looked happy and comfortable. But she
told me as the baby was nursing she would be feeding EBM.
I think she did not want to feel like she was being told what to do. She was
trying to let us know that she was going to do what she wanted to do, not
what we or society in general tells her to do.
Our patients are encouraged to fill out a "Top Hat", which is a written
acknowledgement of particularly good care by a staff member. This mom gave
me a "Top Hat", saying "She (me) really knows how to treat people!" I'm glad
that my non-judgement of her feeding choice did not go unnoticed by her.
Plus, her family owns a fantastic Italian restaurant (you can smell the garlic in
the parking lot!) and treats me to a home-cooked Italian meal after the births
of their babies by way of thanks for my care. MMMM...
