Mardrey -- and everyone,

One of our pediatricians wrote to Eli Lilly re taking Prozac while bf. This,
in part, is their reply:

"During clinical trials for Prozac, bm excretion was measured in 1 lactating
woman. Concentration in mother's plasma was 295 ng/ml, concentration of
fluoxetine plus norfluoextine in the bm was 70.4ng/ml. No adverse effects on
the infant were reported. A second case report by Burch et al were not
greatly different from those previously reported by Isenberg. Baby continued
to thrive, weighing 6550 g at his 4 month checkup. No negative changes in
the baby's behavior, nursing patterns, or other parameters were noted. "

They go on to discuss the case study you mentioned which the entire world
knows about.

"Taddio et all assessed the safety of bf during Prozac rx. 10 women, nursing
11 infants (twins) were asked to collect 5 milk samples at specific times
after taking their dose of Prozac. Drug concetnrations were then measured in
the mother's plasma & milk, and the infants were observed for adverse events.
Using the drug concentration & milk consumption data, the investigatorswere
abelt o calculate infant fluoxetine exposure. The average infant dose ranged
from 5% to 9% of the weight-adjusted maternal dose. None of the infants
exhibited adverse effects. The authors concluded that Prozac therapy for bf
mothers appeared to be justifiable.

"The balance of the available information indicates taht nursing while taking
fluoxetine appears to be safe. However at least 1 case report describes
significant adverse events in a brfd infant whose mother was on Prozac.
Therefore, the decison regarding whether to brfd while taking Prozac should
balance the potential benefits of Prozac therapy to the mother against the
potential risk to the infant."

[Drug companies can probaly write that last sentence in their sleep.]

I know Dr. Hale has some concerns about the long term effects of these types
of drugs.... I also know there are 1000s of women who need Prozac and it's
minions & 1000s of babies of those mothers that really need breastmilk.....
