I have a patient with a 5 week old baby, her second, who constantly wants to
breastfeed. We did ac/pc weights last week and the baby transferred 2.1 oz.
in 15 minutes. There does not appear to be any latch problems. Her initial
weight of 8-5 went down to 7-8. She is now 9-2. She constantly wants to be
on the breast. If she acts satisfied or sleepy, it never lasts more than 20
minutes. With a toddler in the household, this mother is having a hard time
keeping up with the needs of both her children and getting adequate rest for
herself. They bed share at night and the baby is on and off the breast most
of the night while mother is lightly sleeping. She is starting to do a
little pumping to completely empty one breast at a time several times a day
and now is trying to supplement with that to see if her weight gain
increases and she can be satisfied for longer time periods. Any other
suggestions?
