The vitamin d test is called twenty five hydroxy vitamin d, or 25(OH)D.
Optimal levels are 40-50, though I do not know the unit. I'm in the
midwestern USA. I had it done and it was a simple blood draw, with
results in 5 days. I have been taking a good prenatal multi vitamin
most days for years, and garden outside extensively. However, because
of nursling allergies, I do not consume fortified dairy, or really any
fortified (processed) foods at all. My level was 30-something in
mid-summer, so I boosted my supplements.

I realize that many moms we serve are not going to have the resources
to be tested, but many of those who are concerned about this issue do,
so we can let them know about the test and let them take it from there.
I personally would not feel comfortable recommending the high-end
supplement amounts to a mom who had not been tested.
