Maybe this bolus of colostrum immediately after birth is Nature's way to
stoke baby up for the sleepy hours. How many of us have actually heard
swallowing in L&D? And baby can quit when baby wants to, so he won't be
overfed. I think what the body provides should be considered normal.
Afterwards, when RNs are all over a mom & baby because it's been 6 hours
and baby hasn't eaten, I've had mom hand express and drip feed baby for
about 5 min q 1 hr for 2 feeds. RN said, "That not a good feeding" and
stuck baby's heel. Guess what? Sugar was UP just on those drip feedings.
Within another 2 hours, baby became proactive with nursing.
