Dolores asked why teaching of safe infant formula preparation to formula-feeding mothers was required by the Baby Friendly designation process. I sit on the Board of Directors of Baby Friendly USA and our executive director has provided the explanation below.

Since the BFHI is interested in assuring that all babies are properly fed, safe preparation and feeding of infant formula was added to both the US and Global BFHI Criteria. http://www.babyfriendlyusa.org/eng/docs/2010_Guidelines_Criteria_Rev%2011_28_11.pdf p 14 Please note that this teaching should only be provided to postpartum mothers who are formula feeding their infants. Facilities should encourage their health care providers to familiarize themselves with the information found on the following websites below:

WHO: http://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/micro/pif_guidelines.pdf
