Hello, Margaret.
I agree that most moms who feed on cue don't experience early return
of menses, but there are exceptions. I have known two mothers who between them
had 8 children (one had 5, the other 3). Each kept their babies close, slept
with the babies, nursed on cue around the clock, and yet each had their
periods return at 6 weeks postpartum with every one of those babies. While
research seems to show that the average time of return is 8-15 months, there are
those exceptions at either end of that time frame.
I was surprised by your statement that oversupply would lead to early
resumption of menses. I have not heard this before or seen it in the moms
I've worked with. Is this something you have observed frequently? Or do you
have a research reference? Can you share any physiological reasons why this
might be so? Or have you just seen it but don't know why yet? I'm not trying to
challenge the validity of your statement, just wondering why it might work
that way.
Hmmm. As I'm re-reading your post, I'm wondering if I've
misunderstood. Did you mean that the mom Allyson is working with might have two things
going on at once? That oversupply might be causing the mastitis, and it just
also happens that her periods came back early, and you didn't mean the
oversupply caused the periods to come back early?
